Your elderly neighbour’s light has been on all night. What do you do? The difference between noticing the warning signs, or not, can be life or death. To help break the bystander effect, we asked Kiwis to help us check on ‘Joan’ – an elderly woman who could be any of our mums, friends, or neighbours. The earlier people called, the better the outcome was. Not only did thousands help us help Joan, but the New Zealand Police received a significant increase in welfare callouts to the elderly as well.
