In 2017, Auckland, hosted the largest multi-sport event in the world, the World Masters Games. The Games are about more than just winning, so the brand we were asked to create needed to embrace and convey the joy of taking part and the love of sport. This reflected the age group of the athletes, dedication to their craft and sporting prowess.
Before the games began they needed a headquarters for growing staff numbers and their requirements leading up to the event. We were tasked with creating a space that would act both as a gallery celebrating inspiring sporting moments from masters over the years and a functional space to use day-to-day.
We integrated sporting equipment for each of the 28 sports from the games into the office and turned them into works of art. Featured underneath were short descriptions of key sporting moments or trivia. The javelins mounted from the ceiling mid-flight, carried the incredible story of the furthest throw by a competitor who was 89.
The 28 sports items were hand-painted in the brand colours and displayed in a trophy-like manner. There are other playful moments that celebrate each sport. From the golden glove at reception (complimentary mints) to the grandstand seating (waiting area). Basketball nets hang suspended over rubbish bins (practice), actual weights act as door stops and the boardroom table as a pool table. An office environment that's a visual manifesto of what it means to be unforgettable, to be a contestant in The World Masters Games.
